Russians Targeted Marco Rubio’s Presidential Campaign in 2016

A bombshell comment made by a witness at today’s (March 30th) Senate Intelligence Committee hearing alleges that Senator Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) Presidential Campaign was targeted by the Russians.

According to Clint Watts, a fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, Russian operatives and hackers interfered in the 2016 Republican Primary and Rubio was one of their targets. Watts said:

“Russia’s overt media outlets sought to sideline opponents on both sides of the political spectrum with adversarial views of the Kremlin..They were in full swing during the Republican and Democratic primaries and may have sinked the hopes of candidates who were hostile to Russian interests long before the field narrowed. Senator Rubio, in my opinion, you anecdotally suffered through these efforts.”

Rubio later confirmed that former members of his presidential campaign team had been targeted by Russian hackers as recently as the last 24 hours.

“In July of 2016, shortly after I announced that I would seek reelection to the U.S. Senate, former members of my presidential campaign team who had access to the internal information of my presidential campaign were targeted by IP addresses with an unknown location within Russia. That effort was unsuccessful.
I also want to inform the committee that within the last 24 hours, at 10:45 a.m. yesterday, a second attempt was made, again, against former members of my presidential campaign team who had access to our internal information, again targeted from an IP address from an unknown location in Russia. That effort was also unsuccessful.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating Russian attempts to interfere with the 2016 election in order to help elect Donald Trump as President.
