On Wednesday morning, recently confirmed US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, spoke to atrocities committed earlier this week by the Assad regime. Speaking before the UN Security Council, Haley had the following to say:
Yesterday morning, we awoke to pictures [and] to children, foaming at the mouth, suffering convulsions, being carried in the arms of desperate parents. We saw rows of lifeless bodies, some still in diapers, some with visible scars of a chemical weapons attack.
Just a few weeks ago, this council attempted to hold Assad accountable for suffocating his own people to death with toxic chemicals. Russia stood in the way of this accountability, making an unconsiounable choice. They chose to close their eyes to the barbarity. They defied the consience of the world. Russia can not escape responsibility for this. In fact, if Russia had been fulfilling its responsibility, there would not even be any chemical weapons left for the Syrian regime to use.
In a joint press conference with Jordanian King Abdullah II, President Trump condemned the attack as well describing the attack as “an affront to humanity”. When asked by a reporter at the White House whether or not the Trump administration will do more than blame the past Obama administration, Pres. Trump responded: “I now have responsibility and I will have that responsibility and [will] carry it very proudly”.
